FASTags mandate at toll stations to help improve transport efficiency: SIAM

New Delhi, December 2 () The automotive industry body SIAM said on Monday that the FASTags mandate at toll stations on all roads by the government will improve overall transportation efficiency, as there will be a response time faster for the movement of goods and passengers.

Last week, the government extended the date to make FASTag mandatory for the payment of tolls on national highways starting December 15, instead of December 1. I would charge a double fee for users entering the FASTag lane without FASTag from December 15.

The 100% implementation of FASTags would have several economic and environmental benefits in the road transport sector with continuous movement through the toll stations, which would guarantee a faster response time for the movement of goods and passengers and improve the overall efficiency of transport, said the Indian Automobile Manufacturers Society (SIAM), said President Rajan Wadhera in a statement.

SIAM said its members have been playing a crucial role along with the center of the FASTags initiative for the past two years, as a robust process has been established at the end of the dealerships for the installation of FASTags for new passenger vehicles, buses and trucks sold since December 1, 2017.

It is estimated that more than six million FASTags have been issued recently and this has also ensured the growth of FASTags transactions in Electronic Toll Plazas, SIAM said. FASTag is a prepaid tag placed on the windshield of the vehicle that allows automatic deduction of toll charges and allows the vehicle to pass through the toll plaza without stopping for the cash transaction.
