Arjun Kapoor: two bad Fridays can't define who I am
After losing many unwanted kilos, you seem to be in perfect condition. What motivated you?
There are ups and downs in everyone's life and I am no different. But you have to go beyond bad days and work towards a goal. My next movie 'Panipat' is not a boy v/s man movie; It is a clash man against man. Sanjay Dutt He has an imposing personality and I had to face him face to face with him. He had to be a man. In fact, Ashu sir (director Ashutosh Gowariker ) He loved me for my physique. He believes that the warriors at that time had a particular constitution, so it was my responsibility to remain faithful to the character. I have been working on this movie for almost 15 months. Of course, the audience will not see the effort that was made to make the film, but only the final result.
Would you agree that the success of 'Bahubali' is responsible for this sudden interest in vintage extravagances?
Before 'Bahubali', if you watch television again in our country, you will notice that mythologies such as 'Ramayana' and 'Mahabharata' have also attracted attention. The genre intrigues the audience, but before we did not have the infrastructure to make such films. Many of these scripts did not reach the execution stage. But if we can ensure a quality cinema, there is no harm in returning to our history. There are comedy and drama franchises, so why not vintage movie series? We can find our superheroes in these historical.
How much did you know about Sadashiv Rao Bhau and the Battle of 'Panipat' before reading the script?
I knew about the battle of 'Panipat', but I didn't know it was the third. Also, although I knew some anecdotes, I didn't know the details. I was surprised to learn that this chapter became a two-page passage in the history books. The Marathas ran the country for more than 100 years, however, not many have talked about the Maratha warriors or this bloodiest massacre that led to the loss of lives of more than one lakh.
Afraid of offending people?
We don't care about what people will say when making a movie. It cannot please everyone and I have trusted Ashu sir for historical accuracy. Today, people get upset even if the movie is not historical. There is a lot of oppression, depression and negativity, especially in cities, and that makes the current generation super sensitive. You cannot prevent them from reacting.
How do you react to trolls?
Social networks are a dreamland created for people to ventilate. It is a place that seeks attention. I have been through many things to be bogged down by rumors. I have worked hard to reach an enviable position, and I am aware that some will love me, others will not. I can only hope to win them because I believe there is still much goodness in us.
I have done a barbecue and I understand this kind of humor. My problem is when Sadashiv Rao Bhau, who died for the country, is trolled. I urge people to be more respectful of a martyr, our movie is a tribute to them.
You tried success at the beginning of your career, but your last movies didn't do well ...
(Short) ' Ishaqzaade 'and' Aurangzeb 'were launched within 12 months, so I saw the ups and downs of an actor's life in the first year of my career. Finally, nobody is above failure, it is how you react and survive the low phase, which defines you as a star, an actor and a human being. You have to take responsibility for the failure, recognize the fact that the public did not like the movie. I will never disrespect any film I have made, but I hope to align myself with the public's choice. Two bad Fridays cannot define who I am, there is more to me than that.
Your father, Boney Kapoor, is currently making a film about Syed Abdul Rahim, with Ajay Devgn as the successful coach. Being passionate about football, what is your opinion about 'Maidaan'?
(Laughter) Well, he hasn't taken any advice from me. Growing up, I was always overweight and envied those who could go out to play. What I regret most is not being able to practice more sport as a child. That would have made my life much simpler. The story that Dad has chosen to tell is important because these chapters are lost in the history books. I keep telling Amit Sharma, director, that he is my father's favorite son, since he is making this great movie with Ajay Devgn.
You also join your father in the Hindi remake of the Tamil movie, 'Comali'.
We plan to take the film to the ground in 2020, but we have not yet blocked the timeline.
Do you aspire to be a producer one day?
I want to be a complete movie person like Ajay Devgn. He silently directs and produces films, acts on them and also has a visual effects company. He has built all this while fighting the ups and downs of his career.
Now that you have made your relationship with Malaiaka Arora official, are there any plans to get married next year?
If and when I marry, I will inform the media. There is nothing to hide from my side, but I am not looking to get married soon.
There is a lot of curiosity about your personal life, how do you react to this?
I took the time to adapt, but I am not the first actor whose personal life is no longer personal, nor will I be the last. It is a price you pay for stardom. If someone does not like it, they are in the wrong profession. I can't help anyone writing about my personal life because there is an audience that wants to know more. I agree with that as long as you speak respectfully.
