Priyam Garg will lead India in the ICC 2020 U19 World Cup

NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh hitter Priyam Garg will lead the defending champions of India in the U-19 ICC next year Cricket World Cup after BCCI appointed him on Monday captain of a 15-member squad for the tournament to be held in South Africa.

The All India Youth Selection Committee, which met here on Sunday, chose the team for the tournament to be held from January 17 to February 9.



Garg, 19, a right-handed batter of the first order, has a double hundred first class and a century of List A in his name.

He was part of the India C team that finished second in the Deodhar Trophy. He hit a 74 in the final against India B last month.

The 13th edition of the U19 World Cup will be played among 16 teams, divided into four groups.

India is placed in Group A with the first classified Japan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. The two best teams in each group will qualify for the Super League stage.

India is the most successful team in the tournament, as it won four titles to date, including the last edition in 2018, when it beat Australia by eight wickets in the final and remained undefeated in the tournament.

Before the World Cup, the U-19 India team will travel to South Africa for three one-day games against the Proteas U-19 team, followed by a Foursquare Series with South Africa U-19, India U-19, Zimbabwe U - 19 and New Zealand U-19.

CTL Rakshan of Hyderabad will be the additional player on the team for the South Africa tour and the Foursquare Series.
