190 professors at UP fired for using fake degrees

AGRA: The basic education department laid off 190 teachers in Mainpuri and Etah for using fake BEd certificates and certificates to secure their jobs. A total of 116 teachers were fired at Etahand 74 in Mainpuri, which brought the total number of teachers fired by the department to 214 across the state since a special investigation team (SIT) found the anomalies in 2017.

Then UP DGP had ordered an investigation in 2017, SIT discovered that 4,704 people had received false titles, allegedly issued by Agra University in 2004-05. He also discovered that 1,424 of them had been appointed by the basic shiksha department. “The department identified 1,424 people in 4704, who work as teachers in BSA schools throughout the state.

"Of these, 214 have been terminated so far, while 618 teachers, who were issued notices in this regard, have got a stay order from the high court,” said secretary, UP Basic Siksha Parishad, Ruby Singh.

The departmental investigation is being carried out in 11 districts (Meerut, Ghaziabad, Pratapgarh, Jhansi, Rampur, Jalaun, Mahoba, Ambedkar Nagar, Bijnor, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar) have not submitted any information so far, officials said. The number of terminations may increase in the coming days, officials said.

According to a senior official, the court has given provisional relief to many, since the university from which these certificates/trademark sheets were issued has not declared these illegal documents. He told TOI that the department cannot give any evidence to the court in this regard. Probe is also looking to locate 3,283 more people on the SIT list of fake degrees, who might have found work in other departments.

Siksha Adhikari, of Mainpuri, Vijay Pratap Singh said that of the 74 teachers who taught students from class I to V, 33 BEd note sheets were manipulated to increase their grades and 41 degrees were false.

In preparing the fake degrees, Singh said that students who had earned income from an authorized number of seats in affiliated colleges or universities were considered false. He said that all the dismissed teachers began their services in the shiksha parishad basic schools in Mainpuri almost 10 years ago. Most of them are from Mainpuri, he added.

Singh told TOI that FIRs would be signed against them and that orders had been issued for the same. According to the officials, each teacher received a salary of Rs 30-35K per month, on average, since few of them were promoted to the upper primary sections during this period. The salary recovery process will also begin soon, an education department official said.

Etah Basic Siksha Adhikari, Sanjay Singh, also confirmed the withdrawal of 116 teachers from the district. He said that 85 of the 116 brand sheets were tampered with and the rest were reported false.

Till now, five employees of Agra University have been arrested in this connection. The SIT in its report had mentioned that as many as 3,652 employees in the state education department had fake degrees and 1,052 employees had tampered degrees, said education department officials.
