The young people of Coimbatore revive two bodies of water
COIMBATORE: In another instance of concerned people who came together to revive a body of water in the district, young people, professionals and local residents of the village of Somayampalayam near the city have given new life to two tanks in their area.
While both tanks received water under the recent rain, one of them reached its maximum capacity on Sunday after almost eight years.
Volunteers said the twin tanks, which are separated by an intermediate, were the main source of the area. They receive water through streams from catchment areas in the foothills of Maruthamalai.
The tanks dried before, as they were full of garbage and weeds. The condition of the streams, which feed the tank, was also no different and they drowned with silt and weeds.
The volunteers said that the decision to revive the tanks was made in March this year and that they had formed an Aaniver group (which means tap root) for it. Then we mobilized the help of the people and officials of Somayampalayam and Navavoor, who started the dirt removal work with the help of other players.
R Santhakumar, a volunteer, said that because they used to receive water only once in two weeks. “Then, we decided to revive the tanks. We have removed about two or three tons of plastic waste from the tanks and strengthened their deposits. We have also planted more than 200 palmyra seeds around the tanks, ”he said.
The tanks subsequently received water when rain hit the city in the last week. Noting that one of the tanks was full after the rain on Saturday night, one of the volunteers said another shower would cause water to flow over the control dam to the second tank, which was already half full. When the two tanks are filled, water would flow through the canals to the next village and eventually feed the.
Premkumar Ponraj, another volunteer, said they were considering the idea of planting native trees around the tanks to attract birds. “We are planning to plant fruit trees to attract birds. In addition, some more tank channels need dehydration and cleaning. We would also undertake that work, ”he said.
In recent times, volunteers and environmental groups have been working to preserve and revive various bodies of water such as the Chinnavedampatti tank, the Sarkar Samakulam tank and the Vellalore tank in the district.
