11 wounded in shooting in New Orleans

WASHINGTON: Eleven people were injured in a shootout early Sunday in New Orleans, a popular tourist resort, US police said, adding that two of the victims were in critical condition.

The shooting took place at approximately 3:00 am on a busy shopping street near many hotels in a historic district that attracts visitors from around the world.

No fatalities were reported, and police said they responded quickly to the incident as additional patrols were on duty for an annual University Thanksgiving weekend soccer game in the city.

We had officers in that same block who thought they were being fired, police superintendent Shaun Ferguson told reporters.

Unfortunately, there were so many people here that we couldn't determine who was really shooting at that time. We do not know how it started.

He said through his Twitter feed that no arrests had been made and the investigations were ongoing.
