Farmers are the backbone of our country, say DMK parliamentarians at the NACOF meeting

NEW DELHI: DMK leaders urged the government on Saturday to strengthen the agricultural sector, as it is the backbone of the country's economy.

Governments must strengthen the agricultural community as they form the backbone of our country, said K Shanmuga Sundaram, a MPK parliamentarian from Pollachi at an event in Delhi.

This was seconded by P Velusamy, DMK MP of Dindigul. Focusing on organic farming can reap better dividends for farmers, Velusamy added.

The event was a meeting organized by the National Federation of Acquisition, Processing and Retail Cooperatives of India Ltd, () in Delhi on November 30, 2019.

The meeting of state managers deliberated and discussed the roadmap for NACOF, which is one of the country's main farmer cooperatives. The meeting was chaired by the founding president, Ram Iqbal Singh, and the topics discussed included organic agriculture, waste management (solids and water), plastic recycling, solar technology, livestock management and export of high-quality turmeric.

The meeting was attended by RK Ojha, additional MD, NACOF, Surjit Lal, joint MD, NACOF, former NCDC deputy MD, DN Thakur, and a host of other cooperators along with the two DMK parliamentarians.

NACOF is one of the largest farmer cooperatives in India with offices in 24 states and an annual turnover of Rs 676 crore in 2018-19.
