The cold tense most parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh

JAMMU: The nighttime temperature in the two Territories of the Union and Kashmir plummeted below the season average on Sunday with the city of Leh registering the coldest night of the season at minus 13.2 degrees Celsius, the MeT office said.

Srinagar and other places in Kashmir also recorded temperatures below zero, while the minimum temperature in Jammu remained above two levels below normal at 8.2 degrees Celsius, an official with the meteorological department said.

However, early morning Sun provided relief to residents of the Kashmir and Jammu regions.

The famous in northern Kashmir, which experienced several feet of snow last week, was the coldest place recorded in the valley with a minimum of minus 8.0 degrees Celsius, the official said.

He said the Pahalgam hill resort in southern Kashmir also registered a minimum of minus 6.6 degrees Celsius, while the Kupwara municipality of northern Kashmir registered a minimum of minus 3.2 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature in Srinagar was minus 0.9 degrees Celsius, he said.

Katra, which serves as a base camp for pilgrims visiting the Vaishno Devi Shrine in the Reasi district of the Jammu region, recorded a minimum of 7.8 degrees Celsius, the official said, adding that the Bhadarwah municipality of the Doda district was, however , the coldest place recorded in the region with a minimum of 0.2 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, a traffic department official said efforts are on to restore the 434-km Srinagar -Leh national highway - the only road linking Ladakh with Kashmir - and Mughal road which connects the border districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu region with south Kashmir.

While the Srinagar -Leh highway was closed for traffic on November 27 following heavy snowfall in Zojilla pass and adjoining areas, the Mughal road was closed on November 6 after high altitude areas including Pir Ki Gali along the road experienced heavy snowfall.

The Mughal road was cleared of snow accumulated after several weeks of hectic efforts on November 26, but a new period of snowfall hindered the efforts of its early reopening, the official said, adding that men and machines are at work to clear the way. Of snow
