NEW DELHI: Describing organ donation as a divine and noble act that can save lives, the Union health minister urged people to go out and donate organs without fear.
Vardhan, who presided over a donor congratulation ceremony organized by the organ recovery banking organization (ORBO), AIIMS, applauded the courage and courage of the families that made the decision to donate the organs of their loved ones in the circumstances more harmful. There is a lack of awareness, myths and fear in people's minds about organ and tissue donations, he said.
Expressing concern about the huge gap between the demand and the supply of organs and tissues in the country, the Minister of State of the Union for sport and youth and minority affairs stressed the importance of raising awareness about the issue.
In India, about 1.5-2 lakh patients require annually, but only about 7,500-8,000 receive it, said the director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), adding that around 75,000-80,000 patients require transplants of liver annually, but only about 1,800 of such surgeries are performed.
Similarly, a lakh patient needs a corneal transplant, but only 50,000 undergo surgery, he said.
In case the scenario is much bleaker, Guleria said, adding that more than 10,000 people require a heart transplant, while only 150 to 200 transplants are performed annually.
MP and Olympian MC, who was also present at the event, encouraged people to come forward for organ donation.
