The 25th edition of KIFF has a great start
the Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) is 25 and though everyone present missed Amitabh Bachchan, it got off to a great start on Friday evening. the venue, Netaji Indoor Stadium, was packed to capacity. Host June Malia introduced Jisshu Sengupta and Parambrata Chattopadhyay as her co-hosts for the evening and then began a glitzy evening.
the stadium literally erupted with joy at the sight of special guests Shahrukh khan and Sourav Ganguly greet each other with a warm hug in the presence of CM, KIFF director and filmmaker Raj Chakraborty, MP Nurat Jahan, Rakhee Gulzar, Satabdi Roy and other Tollywood celebrities.

Then began a performance by Tanusree Sankar and her troupe, which the audience watched in rapt attention. It was otherwise a flawless show, marred by a blink-and-miss glitch when the soundtrack went offline for a few second. But what more than made up for the moment was a fan shouting his lungs out ‘ Shahrukh khan ’ during was the momentary silence after the performance.
the celebrity guests were then ushered onto the stage. Apart from Sourav and SRK, Mahesh bhatt Rakhi Gulzar Andie MacDowell Volker Schlöndorff, Goutam Ghose, Arindam Sil, Abir Chatterjee, Mimi Chakraborty, Ritwick Chakraborty, Ritabhari Chakraborty, Tnusree Chakraborty, Anuj Sharma, Srijit Mukherji, Kaushik Ganguly and Sandip Ray, among others, were also present. This was followed by the lighting of the inaugural lamp.
It may be mentioned here that Bickram Ghosh scored the inaugural music for the festival, which is all set to showcase 366 films participating from 76 countries. the best film is set to win Rs 51 lakh — the highest prize amount at any film fest.
This was followed by the felicitation where Nusrat felicitated SRK, Jeet Gannguli feted Sourav, Deb feted Rakhi Gulzar, Subhashree feted Volker, Koel feted Andie, Jisshu feted Mahesh bhatt , who hugged the actor and gave a peck on his cheek.
Raj gave the keynote address, followed by Sourav, who mentioned that Big B is not well and, therefore, could not attend the opening ceremony. He also wished the actor a speedy recovery. Then came Rakhi, who delivered his entire speech in Bengali. He also asked SRK, who was standing right next to her, to repeat with her: Or love desher maati, take pore thekai matha. Praising the CM for organizing a great festival and pleasing everyone at the same time, he said the protocol made her call CM Didi, although the latter was younger for her.
Other speakers included Volker, Mahesh bhatt and Andie, all of whom stressed on the beauty of the medium of cinema.
the last to stand on the dais was the CM. But before her, the stadium erupted with cheers as SRK took to the dais. He spoke at length about how Bengal has become part of his life and thanked Sourav for introducing him to the wonderful city of Kolkata and its people. He also thanked the CM for making him feel at home in Kolkata, which is the land that produced many great filmmakers, writers and thinkers.
