Devendra Fadnavis resigns as prime minister of Maharashtra

MUMBAI: The prime minister of Maharashtra resigned on Friday.

Fadnavis led Raj Bhavan in southern Mumbai and presented his resignation to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, sources said.

There has been no progress in government formation, even a fortnight after the results of the assembly survey were announced on October 24.

The BJP and Shiv Sena are entangled in a dispute over the issue of the prime minister's charge, resulting in a stalemate in government formation despite the fact that the results of the assembly survey give the alliance a combined force of 161, beyond the mark of 145 in the 288-member of the house.

In the polls, the BJP won 105 seats, Shiv Sena-56, NCP-54 and Congress won 44 seats.
