Surveys of Sri Lanka: 15 more political parties support Gotabaya Rajapaksa of SLPP
COLOMBO: Fifteen more political parties have supported the presidential candidate of SLPP, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, raising the number of teams that support the former head of defense of Sri Lanka to more than 40, according to a media report.
Up to 35 candidates are in the fray for the presidential elections to be held on November 16. More than 15 million people are eligible to vote.
Fifteen political parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the party (SLPP) on Monday to support Rajapaksa, the Daily Mirror reported.
With the agreements signed, the number of political parties that support Rajapaksa has crossed 40, he said.
The 15 matches were Akhila Ilangei Dravida Mahasabha, Telo Party of Sri Lanka, National Party of the People of Sri Lanka, Janatha Sevaka Pakshaya, Eksath Janatha Jathika Pakshaya, New Democratic Popular Front, Deshapremi Eksath Jathika Pakshaya, Pragathisheeli Janatha Sevaka Pakshaya National Democratic Front , United Democratic National Front, National Front Party, Popular Party of Lanka, Patriotic Progressive Popular Front, Democratic Popular Congress, Islamic Socialist Front and Popular Party of Indian Origin.
Rajapaksa, 70, was the chief of defense during the last years of the three-decade civil war, which ended in 2009 with the death of Supreme LTTE Velupillai Prabhakaran .
