Excerpts

You have never been to India, but enjoy a large fan base here. Any plans to visit India soon?

Arriving in India is the number one thing on my priority list right now. I've never been to India, but I've heard so many amazing things about the country. My fans there are still posting things about my songs and giving me their hearts online, which is amazing. I am interested in coming and exploring the country.

Speaking of your simple Kill My Mind, you said that the song tries to be honest with yourself. What is the story behind the song?

Honestly, what I was trying to say is that I was making music that I thought I should do to meet the needs of the listeners, but now, I think I should follow my heart and do what I love. Two Of Us was an emotional song and very close to my heart, but Kill My Mind is a song where I have kept things very real; Here, it is the address I will go to.

How has fatherhood changed you as a person, and how has your approach to music changed since your son Freddie entered your life?

As for music, I think it is separate because music is universal; Its essence is common, both for you and for everyone else, but yes, fatherhood has changed me as a person and has brought some social and emotional changes. Watching him (Freddie) become this real person is an incredible feeling.

You were once kicked out of a school band when a new kid replaced you as the vocalist, and then, you went on to join Only one direction . While you were always musically inclined, did that incident push you to prove yourself?

While growing up, I was involved with music. I was in a band at school, and we did live shows and sang songs together. Acting with them made me realize that this is what made me happy. Then a show like Factor X happened, and it was a huge deal for me because where I come from, I didn’t have that many opportunities. Eventually, I became a part of Only one direction and it was a dream-like experience.

You started your career as a member of Only one direction , and now, you are a solo artiste. How has the transition been for you?

Since I started as an independent artist, I think I have learned a lot about myself and the music business; Now I am more involved in the conversations, unlike when I was part of the band. Now I understand how marketing works; I know how to answer calls and I have learned to do things on my own. But yes, everything has its pros and cons. When you are in a band, you have other people who know and understand what you are going through; and you can rely on them. But as a solo artist, you are alone and always on the run.

With the song Two Of Us, you expressed love and longing for your mother, can you tell us why it was important for you to express your feelings through this number?

I have a big fan base that listens to me. I wanted to use the song to talk about my emotions and send a message, because it was important for me to express what I felt at the time. I wanted people to know that it's okay to be depressed and sad in life sometimes, that we all go through pain and that we need to talk about our emotions.

You are a trained actor and have been part of several projects in the past, do you plan to continue acting as a full time profession?

When I was younger, I acted a little, and by that I really mean a little (laughs!). Now, when I think about it, I feel I took those projects because, as a musician and artist, it is exciting to perform on stage. Also, by then, I had begun to think that I had found my lane, that I was doing what I loved (or as you say, a true call in life) and so, the acting happened. As a musician, you can be yourself, but as an actor, you must pretend to be someone else. However, it was a great experience.

Bands like Westlife and the Jonas brothers parted ways many years ago but decided to reunite. Do you see Only one direction reuniting in the future?

We are all in that space now (if we are independent musicians), but our fans keep asking about our meeting and we have promised them that we will return one day. I don't know when, but someday I guess we will ...

So is it a maybe?

It's a yes, but at some point (in our careers).
