PANCHKULA: There seems to be no end to the drama in the Tau Devi Lal Stadium here. Panchkula sports department has refused to give the prize money to the Athletes who have won medals in more than one event.

Ankit, a local athlete was completely distraught. He has won a gold medal each in javelin throw as much as Weightlifting . But to his dismay, he claimed to have received the cash prize for just one gold medal.

"This is not the way to treat any athlete. I have won gold in javelin and Weightlifting but have received the prize money for just one. If they didn't want to give the cash prize they shouldn't accepted the entries in both the events," an agitated Ankit told TOI.

The cash prize for the individual category was Rs 2,000 for gold, 1,500 for silver and 1,000 rupees for bronze. While in the equipment category, it was Rs 1,500, Rs 1,000 and Rs 750 for gold, silver and bronze, respectively.

No notification was issued before the tournament about cash prizes. It has never been said that if an athlete wins more than one medal in different events, he will only receive the prize money for only one, said a father on condition of anonymity.

An athlete who has won a pair of medals at two different athletic events also expressed frustration, saying: This is ridiculous. I come from a very humble environment. My parents can't afford to buy shoes or pay for my diet. I was waiting for the prize money to buy a new pair of shoes.

They didn't even give us the Rs 50, which were promised for our refreshments during the tournament. There was no availability of drinking water on the day of the opening of the event. And now they are not giving us our cash prize. I have no idea what to do, I feel so helpless, he added.

TOI's attempts to contact Bhupinder Singh, director of sports at Panchkula and the sports and youth affairs officer of the Suman Saini district, became useless as they did not respond to repeated calls.
