Sethu and Sandipan finish third in the German match

CHENNAI: Great Masters SP Sethuraman & Sandipan Chanda He finished third with 7 points each in 23 Bavarian Chess Open International Championship which concluded in Tegernsee, Germany on Sunday. Ukrainian GMs - Vitaliy Bernadskiy & Pavel Eljanov - won the first & second spots respectively.

Sethuraman missed a golden chance to better his standing as he drew his penultimate round clash against Engel Luis despite being in a winning position. "I had many opportunities to win my round 8 (penultimate clash) but couldn't convert my chances. Having said that, the tournament has been a good learning experience for me," the 27-year-old told TOI on Monday. Sethuraman finished the event with a win over Bryan Smith in the final round. Sethuraman earned 3 points from this tournament & his ELO rating currently is 2637.

Sethuraman gave a good account of himself at the Grand Swiss event recently concluded on the Isle of Man, where he scored 12 impressive ELO points. Doing well on the Isle of Man gave me confidence. The goal is to cross the 2700 ELO mark as soon as possible, he said.

Before the great Swiss tournament, Sethuraman was part of a short camp in Scotland where he trained alongside Jacob Aagard. Being part of those camps rejuvenates you. It helped me gather new perspectives on the game, Sethuraman said. Soon it will be in action at the Winter Chess Classic in St Louis, United States from November 10.
