1 million car charging points in Germany by 2030: Merkel
BERLIN: German Chancellor Angela Merkel wants to dramatically increase the number of charging stations for electric cars in Germany to give consumers more confidence to switch to internal combustion from electric engines .
Speaking in his weekly podcast video on Sunday, Merkel said he wants Germany to have 1 million charging stations by 2030. Currently, Germany has about 21,000 charging stations.
The comments are presented before their meeting on Monday with executives from the automotive industry as part of efforts to help Germany's transport sector meet emission targets.
In addition to talking about Germany's charging infrastructure, Merkel says that those at the meeting will discuss government and industry incentives for electric cars and how to protect the jobs of the auto industry in the middle of the transition to produce more friendly vehicles with environment.
She says that the development of hydrogen-powered cars can also play a role.
