5 candidates for the disputed presidential vote of Algeria
ARGEL, ALGERIA: The electoral body has announced five candidates for the presidential elections of December 12, including two former prime ministers and all the products of the system rejected by months of protests in favor of democracy.
On Saturday, the electoral authority validated the candidacies of former prime ministers Ali Benflis and two former ministers, one of them moderate Islamist, plus the head of a small party.
The elections will replace former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who was forced to resign in April after the protests and a warning from army chief Ahmed Gaid Salah.
The announcement came a day after tens of thousands of Algerians marched for the 37th consecutive week to demand the end of the post-colonial political system of Algeria. Protesters do not trust those who are currently in power to guarantee democratic elections.
