EPL: Newcastle edge West Ham to exit the danger zone

LONDON: Newcastle United eased its Premier league relegation problems after goals Ciaran Clark Federico Fernández and Jonjo Shelvey helped them win nervy 3-2 in West ham united on Saturday.

Defenders Clark and Fernandez sent the Magpies on their way with the headlines of the first half and Shelvey added his third in the 51st minute before Fabian Balbuena and Robert Snodgrass struck for West Ham to establish a dramatic end.

The result raised Newcastle to position 15 in 12 points out of 11 games, while West Ham, which extended its five-game non-league run, fell to 12 in 13 points.

Ireland's center, Clark, led the visitors in a 16-minute lead after a good job by Joelinton and Shelvey before Fernandez took advantage of the careless defense to double the lead in the middle of the initial half.

Newcastle lost several opportunities to increase its lead before the interval as West Ham goalkeeper Roberto Jiménez made three good saves and Shelvey hit the crossbar with an excellent shot in the 35th minute.

Shelvey seemed to have sealed the game as a competition with a sublime final before Balbuena retired one for West Ham and Snodgrass scored in the 90th minute, forcing Newcastle to defend himself desperately in the time of detention.
