I was not surprised by Russia's performance: India's coach, Reid

Bhubaneswar, November 1 () The rankings are barely important in professional field hockey and number 22 in the world. Russia showed that for his performance against the eight-time Indian Olympic champion despite finishing on the losing side, hockey coach Graham Reid believes.

Despite a large gap in the world rankings, Russia offered an impressive performance in its 2-4 loss to India number 5 of the world in the first leg of the two-game Olympic Hockey Ranking at Kalinga Stadium here on Friday.

And the head coach of India, Reid, was not at all surprised by the spectacle of his opponents.

I am not surprised with the performance of Russia. They went out and played very well. All credit for them. World ranking systems barely matter. It seems they have 22 in the world but they are a very good team. That is what I have been saying all along. They had no pressure, Reid said after the game.

Reid, however, promised much better performance from his boys in the second and final game on Saturday.

I was disappointed with the way our boys played today. I have told you about that. Hopefully there will be a reaction tomorrow. We can show everyone tomorrow how well we can play, he said.

Russian coach Vladimir Konkin promised another difficult exit for India on Saturday and said that with only two goals apart, they are still very much in the competition.

We are still in the game. We will chase the Indian team, we promise you, Konkin said. The reason we play so well is that our boys did exactly what our coaching staff told them to do. That's why we had a good result. Actually, we had many opportunities, but we lost them. SSC CPS
