India waiting for an electronic motorcycle that meets design, quality and anxiety about reach: Tork Motors

NEW DELHI: Ratan Tata, president emeritus of Tata Sons to invest an undisclosed amount in the commissioning of electric vehicles based in Pune Tork motors , before the commercial launch of its flagship product T6X.

An investment by Ratan Tata is an endorsement of the long-held belief by us that the Indian auto sector is going through a phase of huge growth and transformation, says Kapil Shelke, founder and CEO of Tork motors . Excerpts from the interview with TOI:

Tell us more about the Tork T6X Electric motorcycle?

It's our first product and an exclusive 'made-in-India'. Every concept, design, components, assembling, and production is done here. The testings are in process and we will soon receive the validation. The Tork T6X has a top speed of 100 kmph, and runs 100 km on a single charge.

Where do you plan to launch the electric motorcycle and what are your expectations?

By the end of 2019 or early-2020, Tork T6X will be rolled out in Pune and Bengaluru. Witnessing the response, we will reach out to other cities. We expect around 3,000-4,000 units of T6X to be sold in the first year.

Do you think India is ready to embrace electric vehicles completely?

India is eagerly waiting for an electric motorcycle that meets the design, quality, and range anxiety. The Tork T6X gets recharged from 0 to 80% in an hour. We are working on the range infrastructure also. Recently, we installed our first EV fast-charging station in Pune. Tork charging stations are 100% compliant to the standardized Bharat EV Specifications and can support any electric vehicle in the city that features a GB/T plug.

Is Tork T6X a competitor of Revolt RV400 ?

Not exactly. The Tork T6X is an electric equivalent of 200-cc motorcycle and is complete 'made-in-India'. I don't think Tork T6X and Revolt RV400 will compete against each other.

Do you think the current auto industry slowdown will affect Tork T6X?

Honestly, we are too naive in the industry to comment on that. However, new launches are happening regularly and the market is cheerful to see a new product. We are hoping Tork T6X receives a warm welcome.

Tell us about your infrastructure and workforce.

We have a very enthusiastic team of 75-odd people. Out of them, 60 are solely working behind the successful launch of Tork T6X. Our suppliers are also helping us immensely and we are planning to ramp up the charging infrastructure across the city.

Ratan Tata's investment and Bharat Forge The support is a validation of our next product. We are also opening our plant in Chakan, Pune very soon.
