Life after Mithali: Shafali, 15, enters the squad of Indian women T20I

NEW DELHI: Veteran Mithali Raj Thursday's withdrawal of the T20 format paved the way for youth induction as a 15-year-old rookie. Shafali Verma at Indian female cricket team for the next house of the International T20 against South Africa.

Shafali was picked following her good performance at Women's T20 Challenge earlier and at the age-group level this year. The diminutive Haryana-girl played under Mithali for Team Velocity at women's T20 challenge which was held during the IPL earlier this year.

Mithali, though, will continue to lead the team at three-match ODI series, which will follow the five T20 Internationals, where Harmanpreet Kaur will captain.

Smriti Mandhana will be Harmanpreet's deputy at T20s.

Mithali decided to leave T20 Internationals after a race that covered 89 games in which he scored 2364 races and 17 half centuries. She led India in 32 T20Is.

The selection committee meeting held at BCCI headquarters on Thursday was attended by Mithali, while T20I captain Harmanpreet and coach WV Raman connected by teleconference.

The Indian team will hold a preparatory camp at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore starting September 12.

The T20I series begins in Surat on September 24.
