Three consecutive successes this year mean that Nandita-Shiboprosad is on a roll
Duo director Nandita Roy & Shiboprosad Mukherjee are undeniably the most successful & prolific filmmakers of the Bengali film industry who have seamlessly etched a special place in the hearts of the audience across the country with their content-rich films. Made under their production company Windows Production, their heart-warming films have left an indelible impact on viewers of all age groups.
Since their very first film, Nandita & Shiboprosad have passed quite a few milestones at the box office & now have made it a habit to whip up a storm at the box office with each of their heart-warming films. In fact, this year, the duo has surpassed all their previous records & delivered not one but three hit films so far.
When asked as to why their films are mostly focused on urban middle class & what the success mantra is, Nandita Roy explains: “The concept of middle class had been prominent because the life of urban middle class has come up subconsciously in our films because that world is more known to us. Like the way Christianity had come up again & again in the films by Bergman. Kolkata has been the life in most of the films by Mrinal Sen. In Ritwik Ghatak’s films, Bangladesh & partition have been the prime focus.”
The duo kick-started the year with Windows Production’s ‘ Mukherjee Dar Bou ’, a beautiful film that explores the relationship between a mother & daughter-in-law in a new light. This woman’s day release not only touched a chord with one & all, but also set the cash registers ringing making debutant director Pritha Chakraborty a well-known face.
"I believe the success is in narrating the shashuri & bouma characters in a simple way, the way we see them at home. It’s not like shashuri & bouma are always on war or testing each other’s nerves or even being extra friendly. It’s a fact that they have to manage & adjust, so both have the same thing playing in mind. When small things get out of control, how you can manage the situation? It’s been shown in a realistic manner. That’s what special in Mukherjee Dar Bou . Everybody is saying, this is my kind of story, Nandita Roy reveals when decoding the success mantra of this film.
Following the success of ‘ Mukherjee Dar Bou ’, the versatile directors released the much-awaited film – ‘Konttho’. The heart-warming film, which celebrates hope & fragility of life while dealing with the subject of laryngeal cancer, was hailed from all quarters & stirred up quite a storm at the box office.
"Content has once again done the trick. That’s why despite the release of ‘Student of the Year 2’, IPL final & ongoing election, ‘Konttho’ has done well & I am really grateful to the audience for their unfettered support," an elated Shiboprosad had said earlier while speaking about the good run at the box office.
And now, a few months after the launch of Konttho, connoisseurs of representing human relationships on the screen have released another movie with the beating heart, Gotro. A moving take on a mother-child relationship, infused with a message of strong community harmony, Gotro made a strong impression on critics & the audience alike & is still enjoying a successful run at the BO.
About their films’ continuous box office success Shiboprosad says: “We make films keeping in mind that while sitting inside the theatre, every person can relate to any of the characters on screen. I think this is the reason why they have always come to us & said ‘This is my story’.”
Clearly, Nandita Roy & Shiboprosad Mukherjee have not only mastered the artistic side of filmmaking but also the commercial aspect of it, & it won’t be a surprise if their next release this year – Belashuru , which is scheduled to launch during Puja, also obtains gold at the box office. More power for this talented duo.
