Expecting great things from Hanuma Vihari, says VVS Laxman
NEW DELHI: India is at the top of the World Test Championship table after dominating the West Indies with a 2-0 sweep of the test series; and while Jasprit Bumrah further cemented his reputation as one of the world's deadliest fast bowlers at this time, Hanuma Vihari The heroics have won him many fans, including Test great VVS Laxman .
Vihari finished at the top of the racing scoring table with 289 races in two races in the Caribbean, including his first century and two fifties, ending with a staggering average of 96.33.
He was one of only two hitters who added more than 200 runs in the series, with Indian vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane (271 runs) the other.
There is much to admire about the brand of Cricket India played, and no one exemplified it better than Hanuma Vihari with the bat and Jasprit Bumrah with the ball, former India batsman Laxman wrote in his column for The Times of India on Thursday.
"I have followed Vihari’s career closely. I am convinced the years of first-class Cricket have instilled the temperament and mindset to score runs consistently in Test Cricket ," Laxman added.
Vihari made his debut in the test against England at The Oval in September last year. His test statistics currently read six games, 456 runs, average 45.60, one century, three fifty. In addition, he has already played 75 first class games on the domestic circuit.
Speaking from experience, I can say that hitting No. 6 is not an easy task, Laxman wrote. But Vihari has been at home, improving his reputation as a test hitter at each start. He is very calm and mature in the fold, seeks to dominate the spinners with an exemplary use of the feet and is safe against fast bowling. I wait for bigger things from him.
Touching India's brilliant bowling exhibition, especially from the fast bowler, Laxman ranked the Indian attack as one of the most powerful in the world today.
(Jasprit) Bumrah, of course, has been a sight to behold for some time. He is in charge of his trade and you can see him develop and improve every day.
"While he is the leader of the attack, it was wonderful to see Ishant (Sharma) maintain his consistency of the last few years, as well as put a price on his wicket. I am sure he must have been as delighted with his maiden half-century as (with) a five-wicket haul. He and Shami are experienced pros and form, alongside Bumrah, a pace attack as good as, if not better than, any going around in world Cricket ," Laxman reckoned.
However, Laxman was a little worried about the Indian batting, particularly KL Rahul The way of
There were many positive aspects to India, but the question marks hover over the batting, Laxman felt.
"Cheteshwar Pujara must be disappointed at a modest start to a new season, but the greater concern is over Rahul. His ability is never under question, and he is no longer a newcomer to Test Cricket . He has got numerous opportunities, but he has often flattered to deceive. India will look for more from him and Rishabh Pant, both with the bat and the gloves, in future," he concluded.
