MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup: Navy beat Railways to make semifinals

CHENNAI: It was an essential game for Indian railways to get to the last stage four but a fuss Indian navy faded their hopes by leaving them 3-0 in the 93rd edition of the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup at Stadium of Mayor Radhakrishnan on Wednesday.

The Navy, who won two and drew one in the last three matches, needed a draw to enter semifinal. With their win against Indian railways , Navy topped the group with 10 points from four matches and became the first team of the tournament to qualify for the semifinals.

Ajinkya Jadhav drew first blood for the Navy in the 32nd minute with a brilliant touch while experienced Pawan Rajbhar doubled the lead five minutes later to compound Indian railways ' misery. After conceding two back-to-back goal, Railways, who finished runners-up last year, were in completely disarray and failed to generate any constructive counter attack to put pressure back on the Navy.

"We needed only a draw for the last-four berth, but I told my boys not to bother about it and go for the win. Railways are one of the best sides but we were confident of doing well against them today. I knew they would attack from the beginning but I had solid planning to neutralize them. Our defence was outstanding today and the forwards didn't make too many mistakes. So far things are moving in the right direction and I hope boys will maintain their form till the end," Indian navy coach Ajay Kumar told TOI after the match.

The Navy could have won the game with a larger margin if they had converted more penalty corners. They won five but could only convert one as Jugraj Singh Encontró la marca para poner el 3-0 at minuto 59.

Más tarde at día, Indian Army registró una victoria consoladora sobre la Fuerza Aérea de la India por 2-1 en su último partido de liga grupal. Ambos equipos están fuera de la competencia por un puesto en la semifinal con solo una victoria en su gatito. Jagat Nachana adelantó a la Fuerza Aérea at minuto 8, mientras que Pratap Shinde igualó at 45 y Vishwa Thakur anotó el ganador at minuto 49.

India Oil Corporation (IOC) thumped Bengaluru Hockey Association 4-1 to keep their record intact and posted their third win in as many matches. With this win, IOC became the second team after Indian navy to enter the last-four stage.
