Daniil Medvedev advances to the first Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open

NEW YORK: Russia Daniil Medvedev advanced to his first Grand Slam semifinal on Tuesday in the United States Open by defeating the three-time main winner Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6 (8/6), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

I am very happy to be in my first semifinal, said Medvedev, fifth place.

Medvedev struggled with pain in his left quadriceps that made him think about leaving the game in the first set.

Before the game I felt perfect. In the first set, I think I took out my quadriceps, said Medvedev. My quadriceps hurt a lot and I thought I wasn't going to continue the game.

Medvedev took a medical waiting time and made him record the area and took an analgesic.

In the fourth set, I began to feel the pain reliever and began to move better, he said. Surely I hope to be ready for the semifinals.

Medvedev, at 23, becomes the youngest United States Open semifinalist since Novak Djokovic in 2010 and Russia's first Slam semifinalist since Mikhail Youzhny at the 2010 United States Open .
