US Open: Wang from China dismisses French Open champion Barty

NEW YORK: Wang Qiang, seeded 18 from China, advanced to the United States Open quarterfinals on Sunday with a 6-2, 6-4 loss of the second Australian seed Ashleigh barty , the current French Open champion.

Wang will face the winner of a subsequent fourth round match between Croatian number 22 Croatian Petra Martic and eighth American seed Serena Williams, who is looking for a Grand Slam title in his 24th race to match Margaret Court's historical record .

Wang wasn't sure if he would watch the Williams-Martic game, leaving that duty to his coach, Thomas Drouet.

I think that's my coach's job, Wang said. I just want to enjoy now and my coach will tell me how to play later.

Wang's previous coach had been Peter McNamara, who died in July of prostate cancer.

Barty, who beat Wang twice last year in his only previous meetings, got rid of 39 unforced errors, while Wang made only 14.

Wang, who had wasted four match points in a semi-final loss last week at the WTA Bronx tournament, enjoyed solid support in Louis Armstrong Stadium .

I love New York, said Wang.
