ITR Filing 2019: more than 5.65 cr tax returns filed as deadline ending August 31

New Delhi, September 1 () Taxpayers filed more than 5.65 million income tax returns for the 2019-20 evaluation year as the deadline ended August 31, showing a 4 percent increase in the presentation of ITR during the previous year, according to the data department tax.

The total number of tax returns (ITR) submitted for the 2018-19 fiscal year was Rs 5.42 million.

Last year, the government extended the deadline for the presentation of ITR for AY 2018-19 until August 31, 2018, while in this context a special extension was granted until September 15, 2018 to Kerala taxpayers.

About 50 lakh people filed their tax returns online on August 31, the last date for ITR filing, data from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) showed.

The Department of Income Taxes has made history with a quantum leap in the electronic filing of ITR with a historical record of 49,29,121 ITR archived in a single day on August 31, it said in a statement.

From August 27 to 31, 1.47,82,095 people filed tax returns online, an increase of 42 percent compared to the same period of AY 2018-19.

He said the I-T department is actively interacting with taxpayers on social networks to help them resolve their complaints and queries related to electronic filing and get compliments in return.

The last date for the presentation of the electronic ITR filing for AY 2019-20 was August 31. He added that the maximum filing rate per second was 196 ITR.

He also said that the information security team at the I-T department thwarted more than 2,205 malicious attacks on the website aimed at interrupting services in the peak period.

Of the 5.65 million rupees recorded so far, 3.61 million rupees have been verified.

A large number of taxpayers, about Rs 2.86 million (79 percent) have opted for electronic verification, mostly using Aadhaar OTP. The IT Department intends to carry out campaigns to raise awareness about the electronic verification of ITRs where verification is still pending. In addition, it is said that taxpayers will also receive information on the need to link their bank account with the PAN to guarantee the direct credit of the refund to the taxpayer's bank account through ECS and the requirement to link the PAN with Aadhaar before 30 September this year.
