Will a Hindi movie about Notee Binodini affect Tollywood's plans?
After Parineeta Pradeep Sarkar will return to his hometown to make a film about Binodini Dasi of Bengal himself, who rose to fame as Notee Binodini . Long before the announcement came, at least two other Bengal filmmakers had expressed a desire to adapt what happened in the actor's life to the big screen. While Srijit Mukherji I had made an announcement about the film, which has not yet been released, Kaushik Ganguly too had wanted to make a film on the stage performer.n Notee Binodini started her career as a courtesan and at the tender age of 12, played her first major role in Calcutta’s National Theater in 1874, under the mentorship of founder Girish Chandra Ghosh. Over the next 12 years, she played around 80 roles, which included those of Pramila, Sita, Draupadi, Radha and Kaikeyi, among others. She also went on to write her own autobiography, becoming one of the first South Asian theater actresses to do so.
rijit, who had wanted to make a film on Notee Binodini five years back, said he later improvised on the subject. “Mine is not a biopic. Earlier, I had wanted to make a film on four women who played Notee Binodini. But later, I decided to tweak it around. I will like to mount Chaitanya sometime next year. It comprises three chapters, one among them is Notee Binodini. That chapter deals with Girish Chandra Ghosh’s plays, Nimai Sannyas & Chaitanyalila and Notee Binodini was a part of both. Notee Binodini is just a part of my film and a Hindi movie on her will not impact my story, ”said Srijit.
About his period film that eventually did not take shape, Kaushik told us, “My interest in Notee Binodini can be traced back to my school days in Narendrapur Ramkrishna Mission. I think my homework was done in my growing up years, when I learnt a lot about Ramkrishna, Girish Ghosh, Binodini Dasi and other luminaries. It's true that I had wanted to make a film on the latter. But then a few years back, I got a call from Srijit, who said he was keen on making a film on Notee Binodini. He is younger than me and I gave in to his request. I feel, the more such subjects are explored, the more we get to think about newer ideas. Also, I like to work on my own stories. ”
That said, if Srijit does not continue with his film, I will ask him if it occurs to me to make a film about the cousin Donna of the Bengali theater, he added.
Sin embargo, esta no es la primera vez que Bengal verá una película sobre ella. Dinen Gupta había dirigido a Debasree Roy & Prosenjit Chatterjee in his movie Nati Binodini in 1994.
