US Open: Alexander Zverev reaches the last 16 for the first time
NEW YORK: Alexander Zverev progressed to the last 16 in the United States Open for the first time on Saturday with a tough 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/4), 6-3, 7-6 (7/3) victory over Slovenia Aljaz Bedene .
The sixth seeded Zverev, who went through a couple of five-set games in his first two rounds, is on his way to a possible quarter-final with three-time champion Rafael Nadal.
It is the first time in the second week. Obviously it is a fourth round. I really don't want to stop here. I want to continue, said Zverev, who then plays with the 20th-seeded Diego Schwartzman or Tennys Sandgren.
I want to keep improving my game. It doesn't get easier, opponents don't get easier, matches don't get easier. We will see how it goes. But I am happy for now.
Zverev returned to work hard for Bedene, in 80th place, in a contest that lasted three hours and 36 minutes, and he spent more time on the court than in his two previous games that went very far.
In general, I mean, all the best players are beating the games, but their goal is to play their best tennis in the second week, he said.
There are still many things to improve. Obviously, I mean, if you go into details, we will be here for a long time. In general, the service, the return. Everything can be better.
