Mission 2023: next stop Telangana, says Amit Shah
HYDERABAD: In a stern message to the BJP unit, the president of the national party and the interior minister of the Union, Amit Shah, on Saturday advised them to think well by registering members in the party as part of the Mission 2023 BJP Government in power in the youngest state of India in the next assembly elections.
Shah highlighted the fact that BJP 's vote share among upper castes soared three times in a span of just six months from 13% to 41% and overall percentage went up from 7.5% to 22% in Telangana. This advantage can not be frittered away, he said kicking off the party's membership drive here.
I asked party leader P Muralidhar Rao about the membership drive. I have said they set a target of enrolling 12 lakh members. I told him they should aim at getting 18-20 lakh members into the party, the BJP chief said.

'Focus on booths where BJP is weak'
Making a veiled comment, Shah said: The Telangana unit does not need to be miserable. If you can not get numbers, you can call me, I'll get more members in each district. Shah told the party leaders to focus on the posts where the party is weak.
He said the bagging of four MP seats in the general elections should be the stepping stone for getting more members into the party which would help BJP make further inroads into Telangana heartland.
I have tore into the dynastic politics of Congress, saying the grand old party should introspect about its position in the electoral landscape. Mincing no words, Shah said BJP is the only party in India which is not shattered by electoral debacles and marches ahead with its ideology and commitment intact.
Shah said: Rajiv Gandhi used to mock us for having only two parliamentarians (AB Vajpayee and C Janga Reddy). He made fun of us that we always believed in the slogan of family planning hum do hamare do. Now, everyone can see where that party is.
The BJP chief repeatedly emphasized the point that the saffron party was not here to pursue 'family politics' or hanker after power. We, as a party, swear by internal democracy and strong ideology. That's why BJP has never disintegrated. Unlike Congress which has Congress A to Z groups. Whenever it's lost in elections, Congress falls apart, he said.
Shah said there were more than 1,600 political parties in India but nobody could weaken BJP 's resolve. I have claimed that political pundits across the world were puzzled by the success of BJP at the hustings. They ask us how to manage the polling booths so well. I am happy that leaders like Sharad Pawar and Akhilesh Yadav who used to laugh at the time taking party membership drives seriously. It only validates our position on how to run a party and turn it into a success story, he said, addressing party leaders and workers drawing a loud cheer.
In response to the Prime Minister, he said that Narendra Modi was firm in making India the third largest economy in the world. Shah said that Modi made the country the sixth largest economy in the world since the 11th, when Vaypayee was the prime minister. Manmohan Singh did nothing.
