The walled city of Jaipur is now a world heritage site.

JAIPUR: The walled city of Jaipur, known worldwide as Pink City, has finally become Unesco. It is the first planned city of India founded by Sawai in 1727, and it is the second Indian city to figure on the prestigious list.

The decision was made on Saturday in Baku, Azerbaijan, at the 43rd session of the WHC, which began on June 30 and ends on July 10.

In 2017, the ancient Ahmedabad was the first city in India to earn the label of heritage city. In 2018, the sites in Mumbai, the Victorian and Art Deco Ensembles that are located along two heritage sites of Fort and Marine Drive, were chosen as World Heritage sites. The 292-year-old campaign for Jaipur, designed by Bengali architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, began in 2015 when it was first nominated.

The urban planning of Jaipur shows an exchange of ancient Western, Mughal and contemporary western ideas that shaped the city, a Unesco statement noted above.

The city hosts several architectural styles, an example of the amalgam of cultures. The statement noted that Jaipur was also an exceptional example of a late medieval trading city in South Asia and defined new concepts for a thriving commercial and trade center. In addition, the city is associated with living traditions in the form of handicrafts that have national and international recognition.

The representative of India in Baku handed the victory to the people of Rajasthan. It is a proud moment for a proud land and proud people: the men and women of Rajasthan. The credit is yours for having fed and protected this heritage for generations, he said.

The achievement is especially worthy for Jaipur, as the International Council of Monuments and Sites (Icomos) recently put the proposal to postponement.

It is a proud moment for the state government to pack this label. ICOMOS had recommended a postponement. However, interested in the title, the state took a series of steps related to the administration that were appreciated and helped us obtain the title, said an official with the local self-government department (LSG).

PM Modi tweeted his happiness in the city by getting the label. The city of Jaipur today received the honor, privilege and responsibility of being inscribed on the world heritage list.
