NEW DELHI: Facing a leadership crisis after Rahul Gandhi As president of Congress, the main leaders of the parties met on Thursday to discuss the way forward, but there was no decision when the Labor Committee of the Congress would meet to decide on his successor.

Senior leaders Motilal Vora Ahmed Patel, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma met in the office of the opposition leader in the Parliament compound and discussed the future course of action, the sources said.

The next step would be to convene a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party's most important decision-making body, and it could happen as early as next week, but there is no official confirmation, they said.

Senior leader of the congress Sonia gandhi is set to travel abroad in the next few days for medical check-up and she is likely to be accompanied by her are Rahul Gandhi.

Your sister and general secretary of the congress. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is already abroad and is unlikely to return soon.

With the Gandhis abroad, a meeting of the CWC could be held without their presence, but any decision on the next head of Congress would not be made without their consent.

Rahul Gandhi attended Mumbai court hearing in a defamation case Thursday and is likely to attend another similar hearing in a Patna court on Saturday.

The various options before the CWC would be to have an interim president of Congress until such time as a regular appointment is made through the election, a new head of Congress is nominated or a presidium that could lead the party so far in that the regular choice to the first place be made.

Probable candidates for the post of Congress president include Motilal Vora, Mallikarjun Kharge, Ashok Gehlot and Mukul Wasnik.

Gandhi, in his open letter on Wednesday, said he had asked the CWC to entrust the task of finding a new group of people to the new president of Congress.

Immediately after I resigned, I suggested to my colleagues in the Working Committee of the Congress that the way forward would be to entrust a group of people with the task of starting the search for a new president. I have given them the power to do it and I committed myself fully. Support for this process and a smooth transition, said Gandhi in his letter.

Rahul Gandhi has already said that any such decision would have his approval but he would not like to get into the selection process.
