There is no proposal to dismiss 54,000 employees approved by BSNL: Prasad

New Delhi, July 4 () State telecoms firm BSNL has not approved any proposal to lay off 54,000 employees, telecoms minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Thursday.

According to official data, a total of 1.63,902 employees, including 46,597 executives and 1,17,305 non-executives, were working with BSNL as of March 31, 2019.

BSNL has reported that BSNL has not approved any proposal to lay off more than 54,000 employees, Prasad said in a written response to Rajya Sabha.

BSNL and MTNL have applied for government permission to monetize their land assets, as well as a voluntary retirement plan for employees in the Gujarat model.

Under the Gujarat model, an amount equivalent to 35 days of salary is offered for each year of service completed and 25 days of salary for each year of service remaining until retirement.

In an answer to a separate question, Prasad said that the salary of BSNL employees in 2018-19 amounted to about 75 percent of the company's total revenues, while the same in the case of private telecommunications companies It varied between 2.9 and 5 percent.

The income of BSNL is set at around 19,308 million rupees, while the expense in the compensation of employees stood at 14,488 crore.

Even so, BSNL has the lowest debt in the telecommunications sector, which is recovering from the total debt burden of around Rs 4.33 lakh crore according to industry analysts.

BSNL has reported that as of March 31, 2019, it has a debt of Rs 16,688, which is the lowest among the main telecommunication operators, Prasad said. PRS ANU
