The industrial Basant Kumar Birla dies

MUMBAI: Industrial Basant Kumar Birla Kumar Mangalam Birla's grandfather died in the financial capital on Wednesday, sources said. He passed away at the age of 98 years.

Birla was the president of Century Textiles and Industries, and had been active in business since he was 15 years old. He was the youngest son of industrialist and philanthropist Ghanshyam Das Birla.

He was instrumental in a series of business initiatives, beginning with his term as president of Kesoram Industries, they said.

Specifically, he seized opportunities in sectors such as cotton, viscose, polyester and nylon yarns, refractories, paper, shipping, tyrecord, transparent paper, spinning tube, cement, tea, coffee, cardamom, chemicals, plywood, MDF board, according to a profile available online.

Kumar Mangalam Birla's father, Aditya Vikram Birla, who died in 1995, was his only son. He is survived by his daughters Jayshree Mohta and Manjushree Khaitan.
