Only 6 detention centers for foreigners declared in Assam
NEW DELHI: Even if residents who have filed claims and objections against their exclusion from the draft NRC will face the prospect of being declared as 'foreigners' by the Aliens Courts if their claims are rejected, there are no more than six centers in the state as of now to keep 'declared foreigners'.
The Minister of State for the home, G Kishan Reddy, while answering a question in the Lok Sabha On Tuesday, he said that the six detention centers in Assam had 1,333 people as of June 25, 2019, of whom 769 had been there for more than a year and 335 for more than three years. All people who need legal assistance receive the same for free from the district's legal services authority, Reddy added.
According to the written response, up to 63,959 people were declared through ex parte proceedings by the Aliens Courts in Assam between 1985 and February 28, 2019.
