Drought, flood new normal when the rain pattern of Karnataka changes

BENGALURU: Karnataka Has Witnessed A Drastic Change In Precipitation Pattern And Spread Over The Past Two Decades, Which Has Resulted In Frequent And Early Rainfall.

According To A Survey By The Natural Disaster Monitoring Center Of Karnataka (KSNDMC), North Karnataka And Coastal Areas Are A Falling Trend In Rainfall, In Addition To A Very High Fluctuation In Rain Distribution.

Since 2000, The State Has Known Less Than 11 Years Of Drought And Two Years Of Flooding.

A Good Example Of This Was 2018 When The State Suffered Flooding And Drought." Karnataka Is Perhaps The Only State In The Country That Calls Both Drought And Flood In The Same Year. It Is Mainly Due To The Drastic Change In Rainfall Distribution," Said GS Srinivas Reddy, Director Of KSNDMC.

While Most Districts Of North Karnataka And Inland Karnataka Were In Drought In 2018, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Dakshina Kannada And Udupi Districts And Parts Of Shivamogga Were Affected By Floods And Unstoppable Rain. Kodagu And Parts Of Chikkamagaluru Even Had The Most To Suffer From The Anger Of The Rain.

Reddy Said Drought And Flooding, Not Because There Is A Drastic Drop Or Increase In Rainfall. Per Data Analysis Since 1991, There Has Been An Average Decrease Of Only 2.5 Mm Of Rain During The Southwestern Monsoon And 4.2 Mm In The Northeastern Monsoon. A 4 Mm Drop In Rain Equals A Loss Of 1 Tm ² Of Water, Which Is Not Significant In Comparison With The State's Annual Rain Yield.

In A Year, Karnataka Receives 1135 Mm Of Rain And The Southwestern Monsoon Accounts For 73%. Since 2011, The State Has Received An Average Rainfall Of 1,033 Mm, Which Is 10% Less Than Normal.

Even The Northern Inland Karnataka Received Good Rainfall With An Average Of 593 Mm Against The Annual Rainfall Of 712 Mm.

It Shows That The Problem Is The Distribution Of Rainfall, Not The Quantity. In 2015, The State Received Good Rainfall In April And Early May To Make Good Sowing Possible. But The Rain Stayed Away In July And August, When It Was Most Needed. It Has Also Been Underway For A Few Days, Reddy Added.
