How does Lewandowski plan to celebrate goals in a post-Covid world?
CHENNAI: The Bundesliga resumes today and Robert Lewandowski I can't wait to get to the field when Bayern Munich take on Union Berlin on Sunday. However, the striker, who has already scored 25 goals this season, feels that it will be strange to play in front of empty stadiums and not celebrate his goals. In an interaction shared by Bayern Munich with TOI, the No. 9 spoke about all these and more. Excerpts:
The virus is not completely eradicated. Are you worried about restarting the season?
I am happy to restart the season and finally be on the field. The situation has stabilized in the last two weeks in Germany . Then we are comfortable.
How prepared are you mentally and physically?
We have not had a break for the past two months (since closing). We have been training at home and trying to keep fit. Since we moved together with the team at the team hotel last week, we have tried not to think about the crisis playing teqball, pool, poker and ping pong. I agree that it won't be easy when we really start playing ... Probably during the first 20 minutes, we might have little confidence. But I hope we gain our self-confidence as the game progresses.
There will also be new regulations in force, such as no handshakes, hugs, bump all five and spit ...
We hit the five and hug each other for emotions and adrenaline. It will be strange if we don't do that. So we have to train our minds in such a way that we don't think about this.
As a striker, how would you feel if you couldn't celebrate your goals?
Probably, I will have to be stoic about my celebrations. It will take two seconds after scoring a goal and I think this is what I have come to do and that I am just doing my job and moving on.
How about playing in front of empty stadiums?
I only played two or three times in front of a minimal crowd in my career. But we have to accept the situation and adapt. The most important thing for us now is to return to the field. The whole world will be watching us because we are the first major league to restart. We want to play quality football and spread joy.
Has the break given you time to recover after suffering a knee injury in CL's quarterfinals against Chelsea?
It gave me enough time to recover. When you return from a mid-season injury, you hardly have time to prepare together with the team in training sessions. But in my case, it was more like the preseason while I recovered.
Speaking of the season, do you see Bayern winning a treble if the Champions League resumes too?
RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund are two dangerous teams and won’t make it easier for us in Bundesliga and the German Cup. They have quality to press and we have to be ready and focused. I just want CL to resume so that we can compete again with the best sides European sides.
