It is the turn of rugby to go virtual

BENGALURU: Hungry Action rugby Fans across the country are excited to support their favorite clubs in the Try series, a virtual tournament hosted by Rugby india , which will launch from Monday.

A total of 32 teams, including top clubs like Delhi hurricanes Kolkata Jungle Crows, Bombay Gymkhana and Bangalore Rugby Club , will vie for maximum eyeballs and likes in the tournament that concludes on May 24.

"We have been doing a lot of stuff through social media including live shows and talk shows to keep our fraternity engaged since April. But we have been missing playing and we were thinking of what could be done to provide them with that kind of thrill and we came up with this virtual tournament," Rugby india CEO Nasser hussain he said to TOI.

"Initially, we thought of a small tournament with 8-10 teams, but the response was so good that we had to increase the number of teams and limit it to 32. There were lot more ready to take part," Hussain added.

The former India captain said the 32 teams would feature in a knockout tournament to decide the winner. "Once the schedule goes up, there will be a 24-hour window for the fans to vote for their favourite team. Fans can vote once on all three platforms -- Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and team with more votes will win the match. It's all about them sharing and promoting it and getting more and more people to vote," he said.

According to the Rugby india official, fans are looking forward to the tournament. "It got popular on social media within hours. Once we put up the post of the tournament, there were about 500-600 comments in about three hours," he added.

The national body has over 40,000 followers on social media and it will be interesting to see the performance of the fans who will be solely responsible for the fortunes of the teams. The only teams to miss out were the department teams including those from the Army and Police who didn't get permission to take part.
