2021 Chengdu Summer Universiade still on the way: FISU
BEIJING: Preparations for the 2021 Summer College Games in Chengdu go smoothly and the tournament is held on time despite the global pandemic of COVID-19, according to senior officials of the International Federation of University Sports (FISU)
We recently had a very productive virtual meeting with the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Chengdu, where we discussed all aspects of the preparation. The Chengdu Organizing Committee presented an excellent video detailing the progress of construction and renovation of all major venues, including athletes' town, FISU general secretary Eric Saintrond he told the Xinhua News Agency.
Everything is on the right track and I must say that they returned to work faster than we expected. With the mayor's personal attention, preparations will continue well.
After the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics Until 2021, the Chengdu Summer University Games are now slated to open just 10 days after the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games, and FISU expects some student-athletes to compete in Chengdu immediately after Tokyo.
2021 promises to be a great summer of top-level international multi-sport competition. Many Olympic athletes also participate in the World University Games, and now have the opportunity to prepare for two major multi-sport competitions in Asia in the same period, said FISU president. Oleg Matytsin .
The change in dates of the Olympics will indeed allow some student athletes already in Asia to move to Chengdu after Tokyo, Saintrond said. I am sure that many participants of the University World Games will hope to prove themselves against the recent Olympians.
FISU will launch a Healthy Campus Label project on May 12, in response to the challenge that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to college sports.
