Largest outbreak in Delhi (384), India (2,564); record 99 deaths

NEW DELHI: The Covid-19 pandemic grew grimmer in Delhi with 384 new ones reported on Saturday, the largest increase in the capital in a single day, even as new cases across the country crossed 2,500 for the first time. India also saw 99 deaths from the virus in the past 24 hours, again the highest number reported so far.

With the addition of 2,564 cases on Saturday, breaking Friday's record of 2,333 cases, the Covid-19 count in India was 211 less than 40,000. The death toll has risen to 1,320, including a 20-day-old baby who died in Jaipur. On the positive side, more than 10,000 patients have been declared cured.

New cases in India on Saturday touched a new record despite a drop in numbers in Maharashtra, which reported 790 cases, 218 fewer than Friday's count. Delhi was not the only state that reported a record number of new cases. Tamil Nadu (231), (187) and (127) reported their largest daily increase in cases, while Covid infections also increased in Gujarat (333), Uttar Pradesh (159) and Rajasthan (106).

Maharashtra recorded the highest number in a single day for the infection with 36 more deaths, bringing the total deaths in the state to 521. Mumbai only registered 27 recent deaths. Maharashtra also recorded 790, a significant reduction from 1,008 cases on Friday, bringing its total Covid-19 count to 12,296.

Delhi's total Covid-19 count has reached 4,122 with 384 new cases. Three more people died from Covid-19 in the state, bringing their death toll to 64. There have been 26 coronavirus-related deaths in West Bengal in the past two days, bringing the state figure to 48. Andhra Pradesh recorded 62 more cases of Covid-19, bringing the total to 1,525. Two journalists in Vijayawada also tested positive.
