Gujarat: Covid-19 man who escaped isolation found dead on NCH campus
SURAT: A 50-year-old Covid-19 positive patient, who mysteriously disappeared from New Civil Hospital (NCH) on April 28, was found dead on the hospital campus on Thursday.
The body of a resident of Maan Darwaja's home was found near the autopsy room on Wednesday night.
The hospital was informed of an unidentified body lying on campus in the late afternoon. We informed the police and confirmed after verification on Thursday that the body was Rana's, said Ketan Naik, a resident medical officer at NCH.
NCH authorities said Rana had succumbed to the infection. Rana had tested positive on April 21 and has since been admitted to the isolation room. But somehow, he disappeared on April 28 around 11 a.m., after which NCH authorities filed a report at the Khatodara police station.
NCH officials and police had reviewed the hospital's CCTV footage, but could not find out how he escaped and where he went for nearly 24 hours.
The body was sent for cremation since an autopsy is not required in patients with Covid-19. There are no marks of bodily injury or signs of suicide, Naik said.
The body will be cremated by volunteers from the Ekta Trust, which provides cremation services to Covid19 patients as all members of Rana's family are in quarantine.
The waiting area under the tin roof outside the autopsy room was disinfected by the health team.
Maan Darwaja's home in the Limbayat area is the access point for Covid-19. Of the total of 231 positive cases reported in this area, around 90% are from the Maan Darwaja home.
