More than the viewers, I'm excited to see Kayamkulam Kochunni, says actor Manikuttan

Malayalees always had a special love place for Kochunni even though he was a thief. The Malayalam television public poured love into Manikuttan when he played the same character in the biopic ' Kayamkulam Kochunni 'on television 15 years back. Now, the show is having a rerun during the COVID 19 lockdown and just like the viewers, the actor is also excited about it. In an exclusive chat with ETimes-TV, Manikuttan recollected his memories associated with the iconic show.

I attended the audition for a supporting role in the serial. I was surprised when I got selected for playing the youth of Kayamkulam Kochunni. I wasn't confident enough to do it. I panicked when I realized that I have to essay the character which was once done by legendary actor Satyan in the movie. Initially, I was assigned to do only 8 episodes, thanks to the audience support, I completed 200 plus episodes playing the ever-loving thief, he recollected.

After the show, Manikuttan was seen playing lead roles in many movies, but still, people love him as 'Kochunni'.

It is an honor for an actor. When the movie 'Kayamkulam Kochunni' was released recently, I got many comments mentioning that they still adore the version I played, Manikuttan said.

The actor feels that the set of the iconic show was more like a school for him. He was also proud to be able to achieve the character despite facing many difficulties.

It was my dream to get a degree from MG University. I managed to get a seat there too. But, due to the shooting, I missed many classes and the university fired me. As the famous quote says, There is no pain without gain. I ended up as a dropout but my on-screen character is still fresh in viewers' minds, he said.

Talking about the re-run of the show, Manikuttan shared I am eagerly waiting to see my part on TV. During the shoots, I couldn't watch the show. 15 years back, we didn't have any episode banking. After a days shoot, the cassettes with rushes should go to Chennai via air cargo for editing. I could hardly see one or two episodes when the show was running.

The actor also added that he is happy that people remember him and contacted him shortly after the repeat announcement.
