VJD: Techie Kolle Opens BCCI 'Window' of Opportunity
BENGALURU: Bengaluru based software engineer Keshav Kolle , referee and scorer of the Cricket Control Board in India ( BCCI ), has made the most of the blocking time, developing a Windows version of the VJD method, the official tool used by the cricket board to calculate the target scores in limited domestic matches, making it easier for scorers and umpires to use.
Currently in DOS version, the VJD method is time consuming and less appealing with match officials needing special training to operate it. The new version is quick in getting the results and requires no training. It is self-explanatory and every input required to use the application is available on a single screen.
Jayadevan, who devised the method, has sent the new version to BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and general manager Saba Karim with a request that it be used in IPL. Ganguly was part of the Sunil Gavaskar-led technical committee which recommended the use of the VJD method in IPL in 2010.
As a scorer, I had first-hand experience with the DOS version. Three years back, P Jayapal, a match official with BCCI, asked me to meet Jayadevan to work on the new version. But the meeting didn't happen. After I got inducted into the BCCI panel of umpires in 2018, I started working on it again. Once it took shape, I contacted Jayadevan. We worked on it together.
I had a few updates to make the results more accurate. During block time, I incorporated those updates and it is now ready to be released, Keshav said.
According to Keshav, the DOS version asks the user to supply certain values (remaining excesses, punctuated executions, etc.) one after another. The user should be aware of what the next entry should be, which is time consuming, he said.
The DLS method, used in international matches and Indian Premier League , work on the Java platform which enables the calculation of target score at one go. VJD is much more realistic compared to the DLS method when it comes to logic and revised targets, Keshav, 36, added.
