Ciaz, Verna or City: Which midsize sedan did India choose in FY19-20?
NEW DELHI: Two facts are clear and clear before releasing the best-selling midsize sedan in India in fiscal year 2019-20. The market witnessed an unprecedented drop in the passenger car segment and secondly, we had no new faces in the middle class of sedans.
It finished at the top of the table with 25,258 units sold between April 2019 and March 2020. Ciaz, however, witnessed a 45% decrease compared to the same period last year, where 46,169 units were sold in the internal market.
The race for second place was neck and neck between Hyundai and, with a margin of 20 units. A segment that is dotted with Skoda Rapid and Toyota Yaris, Verna and City held its ground in rough waters.
The mid-size sedan with a compact length (4,250-4,500mm) and a 1.6-liter capacity draws buyers who are upgrading from a compact sedan and, at the same time, a worthy choice for SUVs.
Second on the list is Honda City with 20,912 units in fiscal year 19-20. The fifth generation of City, which was delayed due to a coronavirus pandemic, is likely to increase the accumulated demand for the car. City's sales in FY19-20, like Ciaz, fell 49% against FY18-19.
Popular Hyundai Verna It followed Honda City with 20,894 units in the period from April 2019 to March 2020. Verna faced a 47% drop compared to the same period last year, when it recorded sales of 39,568 units.
