The situation in Spain is difficult, says former Barcelona and ATK midfielder Jofre Mateu
KOLKATA: As the Covid-19 pandemic breaks out, Spain, one of the hardest hit, continues to wage a difficult battle to try to contain the infection and keep its citizens out of harm's way. One of those citizens is the former FC Barcelona midfielder. Jofre Mateu , who was among the first wave of Spanish in Indian football, when he joined ATK (then Kolkata Athletic ) in the inaugural season of ISL in 2014.
The Spanish said that the situation in his country is difficult.
I am in Barcelona. My parents are in their hometown where I was born (Alpicat). Fortunately, we are fine, but the situation is difficult. Many people are concerned about the economic effects in the near future. At the moment, the focus is on getting through this phase in the best possible way. The ease with which one can become infected with this virus is a problem. Therefore, we have to stay home and take responsibility for the elderly, he said. This is not something we have come across before. Certain moments are difficult, but there are some positives to take advantage of.
At home, the 40-year-old is trying to make the most of the time at hand. “During our daily life, we always find the excuse of not having time to do certain things. Now, we cannot do that. We try to spend our time doing various things. I cook a lot, I read, I try to keep fit with a lot of exercise and work on projects that will emerge after we return to normal. And, spending so much time with my daughter is the best part, ”she said.
Like many others, Jofre feels that coronavirus The outbreak will bring some changes in world football and maintains the hope that the League will be completed this season.
I think season planning will be different in a way and there will probably be shorter contracts, he said, adding: I really hope the League will resume again this season. Otherwise, there may be some unfair decisions. The League could restart in late June and end in a month and a half.
Jofre won the ISL title with ATK in 2014, a team that was coached by Antonio Lopez Habas and he had players like Luis García and Borja Fernández. Then she moved to FC Goa and it was also very popular with followers.
“My experience in India was extraordinary. I follow ISL and saw ATK win the title again with Antonio. Congratulations to them. I have great memories in both Kolkata and Goa. The two experiences are different and I cannot choose one over the other. It is always good to hear about India. I am in contact with some of the Spanish players and coaches. Luis García, Borja and I are a kind of guide for others who went to India later ”, he signed.
