Government-Funded Voice of America Amplifies Chinese Propaganda: The White House

WASHINGTON: Voice of america (VOA), the US-funded global media outlet, is amplifying Chinese propaganda about the coronavirus, the White House said, launching a tirade against the news network that broadcasts in multiple languages primarily in the developing world.

The White House in its 1600 Daily bulletin referred to the VOA broadcast that called the closure in Wuhan of China, the epicenter of the pandemic, a successful model copied by many countries.

The 1600 Daily bulletin gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the White House, the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States.

It also provides a daily summary of news and events from the White House.

Journalists should report the facts, but VOA amplified Beijing's propaganda. This week, VOA called Wuhan's closure of China a successful 'model' copied by much of the world, and then tweeted a video of the Communist government's celebratory light show marking the alleged end of the quarantine, the House said Blanca.

Even worse, while much of the American media takes its lead from China, VOA went one step further: It created charts with Communist government statistics to compare the number of deaths from China's coronavirus with that of the United States. As intelligence experts point out, there is simply no way to verify the accuracy of China's numbers, the White House alleged.

VOA is a global news network funded by American taxpayers. It spends about $ 200 million each year on its mission to tell the history of the United States and present United States policies clearly and effectively to people around the world, the White House said in its daily bulletin.

Today, however, VOA often speaks for America's adversaries, not for its citizens. The coronavirus pandemic is no exception. The secret of the Communist Party of China allowed the deadly virus to spread worldwide, he said.

The coronavirus story is just one example of this pattern, he said.

Last year, VOA helped highlight Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif's Twitter feed while issuing threats against the United States and sharing Russian propaganda videos against the United States, the White House said.

VOA will represent the United States, its Guidance Letter reads. And for years after its founding during World War II, VOA accomplished that mission by promoting freedom and democracy worldwide for audiences that yearned for both. Today, VOA is promoting the propaganda, and its taxes are paying for it, the White House alleged.

Mainly viewed by foreign audiences, VOA produces digital, television and radio content in 47 languages. Based in Washington, DC, VOA is overseen by the United States Agency for Global Media, an independent government agency.

Funds are allocated annually by Congress under the budget for embassies and consulates.
