Assam MLA was detained for comments calling COVID 19 hospitals worse than detention centers

Guwahati: An opposition MLA in Assam was arrested Tuesday for making objectionable comments about the condition of quarantine facilities and hospitals treating patients with COVID 19, calling them worse than detention centers, police said.

Aminul Islam, the All India United Democratic Front The Dhing constituency legislator (AIDUF) was arrested early in the morning after preliminary questioning, the state police chief told PTI.

An audio clip containing a phone conversation allegedly between Islam and another person was circulating on social media where the legislator was heard speaking disparagingly about quarantine facilities and hospitals.

He also allegedly said that living conditions there were worse than those in detention centers.

Hundreds of suspected illegal immigrants, many of them Muslims, are housed in Assam detention centers after they were not listed in the updated controversial National Register of Citizens.

We have registered a case against him in various sections of the IPC for criminal conspiracy, spreading disaffection between communities, among others, said Mahanta.

He said that the President of the Assam Assembly has been briefed on the development.
