How to clean and disinfect your homemade masks every day

NEW DELHI: A protective mask can be made from simple household materials. However, according to the World Health Organization, masks are effective only when used in combination with other hygiene routines. Keeping your DIY masks clean (do-it-yourself) is paramount to fulfill your purpose. That is why it is mandatory to clean a homemade mask every day.

While a disposable mask (surgical mask) cannot resist washing and must be thrown away after a single use, a handmade mask (cotton mask) can be cleaned.

Here are some options to clean up:

Option1 1: Wash the mask well with warm soapy water and let it dry in the sun for at least 5 hours.

Option 2: If you don't have access to the sun, place the mask in water in a pressure cooker and boil it under pressure for at least 10 minutes and let it dry. It is recommended to add salt to the water. In the absence of a pressure cooker, you can boil the cloth mask in hot water for 15 minutes.

Option 3: If you do not have access to a pressure cooker/boiling water, wash and clean the mask with soap and apply heat to the mask for up to five minutes. You can use an iron.
