US employment falls 701,000 in March amid coronavirus: Government

WASHINGTON: It cut 701,000 jobs in March amid damage caused by the coronavirus closures, while the unemployment rate rose to 4.4 percent, the labor department reported Friday.

That was the worst job loss since March 2009 during the global financial crisis and the biggest jump in the unemployment rate in more than 45 years, according to the report.

However, the labor department acknowledged that it cannot accurately quantify the effects of the pandemic on the labor market in March.
