Cricket test has made me a better person: Virat Kohli
NEW DELHI: Captain of India Virat Kohli on Thursday he said he became a better person playing Cricket test , calling the format a representation of life where one does not have the option to give up when things get difficult.
Talking to the former England hitter and IPL teammate Kevin Pietersen during an Instagram live, Kohli touched upon his passion for Cricket test , the worst phase of his career, how he turned into a vegan and how much he is filled with gratitude for being able to live a comfortable life during a global crisis like COVID-19 .
Asked which is his favourite format, the Indian skipper emphatically replied: " Cricket test , Cricket test , Cricket test , Cricket test and Cricket test . I have said it five times."
Because it is the representation of life. Whether you run or not, you have to clap when others are hitting. You have to go back to your room, get up and come the next day.
"You have to follow the routine whether you like it or not. It's like life where you don't have the option of not competing. Cricket test has made me a better person," said world's premier batsman, who has 27 hundreds and 7240 runs in 86 games.
Pietersen, an excellent test hitter, praised Kohli for smashing the idea of the four-day testing that the ICC has presented to attract more crowds.
"I was called for a debate and I told them that if Virat Kohli doesn't want four day Tests, it's not happening," the former England captain said as Kohli had a hearty laugh.
Speaking of becoming a better person, Kohli felt he could count his blessings of having all the comforts in life at a time when the world is reeling from the ravages of the new coronavirus.
I thank God that I have a place to live at a time when people are struggling to find work. You just want to sit down and reflect. You are full of gratitude. We should never sit back and complain about what we don't do. Did not say.
His aggressive behavior in the field has polarized opinions, but the Indian boss feels that, for him, aggression is a form of enjoyment and then he comes thinking about the strategy.
I don't think I should behave just because I'm the captain. I need to be able to enjoy and then comes the strategy.
But there is a guy who will never sled in his life and he is AB de Villiers, for the simple reason that there is too much respect.
IPL has done a lot in terms of mutual respect. I could never (sled) with AB. There is a friendship that lasts much longer than all these things.
In fact, when asked to pick two hitters he enjoys the most, De Villiers is one of them along with the former captain. Mahendra Singh Dhoni .
I enjoy hitting with those who understand my career among wickets. You have to understand my calls. I enjoyed hitting with MS and AB, we don't even need to call while looking at each other and we know it.
On becoming a vegetarian, Kohli spoke about how he developed a cervical spine problem during the 2018 South African tour.
I literally felt nothing in my little fingers. I also realized that I had an acidic stomach and that calcium was being extracted from the bones. I stopped eating meat and never felt better. Now I can play two test games with little gap at 120 percent intensity.
As he had said before, he would like to play all formats until 2023 and then take a call, reiterated that the 2014 tour of England was the lowest point in his career when he felt that failure was inevitable.
It was a phase where I felt that there was no chance that I would get any degree. I would get up and go to a game knowing that I wouldn't get races. Going through that feeling that you would fail demolished me.
"I promised never to let that happen to me again," he said with a message for all youngsters who want to be the next Virat Kohli .
The reason for the disaster in England was putting himself at the forefront of the team and being obsessed with his own game and success and failing to shut up the voices that spoke of success in England as the ultimate test of a cricket player.
Don't focus on yourself, was his message to the youth.
A hero to millions, Kohli also has his heroes. One of them is Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo, who likes him more than Lionel Messi.
I love his work ethic and his ability to divert all trash from the outside, he reasoned.
